Measurements made by most non-contact optical measuring devices are sensitive to the lighting and object optical conditions. White light fringe projection systems and laser systems often require extensive surface preparation that uses a white powder to provide optimum optical surface properties. Devices that do not require surface preparation do so with a trade-off of accuracy. The Comet T-Scan uses a rotating laser point that addresses the environmental issues faced by most optical digitisers.

The COMET T-Scan is an intelligent rotating-point hand held laser measuring system. The rotating laser point optimizes the optical environment through constant feedback. Changes in optical characteristics are dynamically modulated with each measuring point providing feedback to the sensor, Moving the hand-held sensor with paintbrush-like strokes generate a complete set of surface coordinates that is displayed in real-time. The system has been designed to be robust for industrial applications and is insensitive to industrial lighting conditions and object color. Time consuming surface preparation is therefore eliminated. A high frequency data acquisition enables a fast rate of 3D point space digitizing The T-Scan is a highly portable optical CMM that is accurate, easy-to-use, flexible, and fast.
